HOW TO ELABORATE YOUR SUPPORTING DETAILS

The supporting details come after the topic sentence, making up the body of a paragraph. supporting details give details to develop and support the main idea of the paragraph as well as explain and discuss the topic sentence.

You can write supporting details using:


  1. Statistics - a fact or piece of data from a study of a large quantity of numerical data
  2. Anecdotes - a short and amusing or interesting account, which may depict a real incident or person. An anecdote is always presented as based in a real incident involving actual persons, whether famous or not, usually in an identifiable place.
  3. Example - a number of things, or a part of something, taken to show the character of the whole
  4. Reason - a cause, explanation, or justification for an action or event
  5. Authority - the right conferred by recognized social position
To get a good supporting details, you must use two of the above in one paragraph

Example:

TOPIC SENTENCE

1.      A (good friend) has (two importance qualities.)

The importance qualities of good friends are more likely to listen patiently and sympathetically to your problems, to share things with you, supportive and to offer you help when needed. (Authority) A recent studies by Christopher P. Roberts-Griffin in his study about What Is a Good Friend: Qualitative Analysis of desired Friendship Qualities state that qualities such as trust, honesty and supportiveness were a good characteristic of a good friend. (Anecdote) During my first semester, I met someone that I called friend. Her name is Erika. She can land me a shoulder when I need somebody to express real feeling and also listen to my problem.

2.      There are (several causes) of (stress.)


One of the causes of stress is job pressure. Job pressure is a pressure when workers get when he at the workplace. (Reasons) Most of workers get workplace stress because of the fear of being laid off, more overtime due and pressure to perform to meet rising expectations but with no increase in job satisfaction. (Statistics) According to American Psychological Association, American Institute of Stress, there are 48 percent people in United State having a stress because of job pressure.
